Nataka-do is a method for actors which melts acting and martial arts in a single form of corporeal expression, exalting the outward plasticity and developing internal harmony. This theatrical discipline transforms the physical fight in choreography, highlighting the expressive and communicative potentialities of action.
Nataka-do was structured in 2001 by Gabriele Goria and Fabrizio Nicastro. The method provides the study of  martial arts techniques along with sequences of drama improvisations, in order to create fighting choreographies. The method is adaptable both in theatre and in cinema.

Nataka, from Sanskrit, means “actor” or “dancer” or “mime”. In this contest it emphasizes the element of instinctive exploration of expressive qualities, trough sequences of theatrical improvisation.

Do, from Japanese, means “way”, “route”, “walk”, and in this case it designates the martial discipline support, which helps the harmonic developing of athletic capacities and mental balance.

Shiva Nataraja

Museé Guimet in Paris, France
