The election for the cybernauts' favourite supporting character took place between November 1st and December 31st 1997. 881 visitors voted for the candidate of their choice from among Chang Chong Jen, General Alcazar, Emir Ben Kalish Ezab, Oliveira da Figueira, Szut, Rastapopoulos, Allan, Muller and Colonel Sponsz. Let's see the results...
Distribution of the votes In all, 881 ballot papers were accepted. Children of 9 years old or less counted for 10.4% of the electorate. 10-19 years old for 36.2%. 20-29 years-old for 14.5% and 40+ for 15.8% (cf. table 1). The distribution hasn't changed a lot since the last election. Geographically, the big majority of votes came from Quebec and Canada, with a slight increase, with 67.1%. France followed with 19.6% and Begium came third with 5%. Next came non-French-speaking Europe with 3.2%, followed by Switzerland (2.3%) and the remaining 2.8% covered the rest of the world (cf. table 1).
The favourite characters Not surprisingly, Chang achived 32.2% followed not too closely by General Alcazar, who collected 21.7% of the vote. Then came Rastapopoulos (14.2%), Oliveira da Figueira (12.3%), Szut (8.7%), Ben Kalish Ezab (3.2%), Sponsz (2.8%), Allan (2.6%) and Müller (2.3%) (cf. table 3). So, Chang won the victory just as we foresaw. It's true this character is likeable and is Tintin's first true friend (except Snowy, of course). General Alcazar, who we can compare with Captain Haddock among the supporting characters, did very well. Rastapopoulos, even though he's among the "baddies", is so ridiculous that he seemed to arouse a sort of affection. Due to this fact, he is ahead of the colourful Oliveira da Figueira. Though Szut achieved a honourable score because, he doesn't appear in the adventures often enough to be very famous. As for Emir Ben Kalish Ezab: is he too smooth, or too selfish to attract the electors' affection? On their side, Sponsz, Allan and Muller collected only what they deserved.....
The favourite characters by country or region In Quebec and Canada, Chang won with 33.2% of the vote. Alcazar followed with 21.2% and Rastapopoulos was third with142% (cf. table 4). The majority of the voters came from Quebec, so the differences with the general chart are trifling. In France, the results are closer. Chang collected 24.3% followed by Alcazar (21.7%) and da Figueira just passing Rastapopoulos with 15% (cf. table 5). Emir Ben Kalish Ezab was so unpopular that even Muller - last in the general chart - passed him.
In Tintin's country, the villains aren't liked very much. Chang collected 31.8%. General Alcazar was second with 25% and da Figueira was third with 15.9% (cf. table 6). Ben Kalish Ezab, Sponsz and Allan didn't get one vote. In Switzerland, the electors' choice was very clear. Chang won half the votes followed by Rastapopoulos (20%) and da Figueira (15%) (cf. table 7). An interesting fact is that Sponsz was fourth and passed even Alcazar and Szut in popularity. The latter collecting no votes like Ben Kalish Ezab, Muller and Allan.
It was only in non-French-speaking Europe that Chang lost his title, da Figueira winning with 28.6% followed closely by the former (25%) and Alcazar (21.4%) (cf. table 8). Would da Figueira above all be the "European" figure?... Finally, in the rest of the world, Chang won 28% of the vote; General Alcazar and Rastapopoulos collected respectively 24% and 20% (cf. table 9). da Figueira was clearly less popular and got only 4% like Sponsz and Allan.
The favourite characters by age bracket Among 9 years old and less, Chang was the great favourite with 35.9%. Rastapopoulos followed with 20.7% and General Alacazar was third with 14.1% (cf. table 10). So unsurprisingly Chang stayed the favourite, and the "baddies", except Rastapopoulos, were definetely last. Among the 10-19 years old who were a big part of the electorate, Chang was still first with an impressive 37.9% followed far behind by Alcazar who collected 21% and Rastapopoulos who was third with 10.3% of the vote (cf. table 11). Obviously, those results are more or less the same as the general results.
Among 20-29 years old, Alcazar succeeded in a breakthrough and passed Chang with 28.1%. The latter got 26.6% and da Figueira took third place with 13.3% (cf. table 12). Chang resumed first place with 28.9% among the 30-39 years old. He was followed by Alcazar and Rastapopoulos ex aequo with 18.7% (cf. table 13). Finally, among the 40+, Chang stayed in the lead with 28.1%. He was followed by da Figueira (23%) and General Alcazar (18.7%) (cf. table 14). In general, the results don't vary a lot with age while the opposite is true for the favourite principal character...
